Magic School AI-Take a Look!
When I got into magicschool.ai online, I asked it to create a lesson over one math standard and one technology:
- Standard: 7.GM.2. "Use mathematical models and problems to calculate and justify the area of trapezoids and the area and perimeter of composite figures with rational measurements."
- ISTE student standard 6: Creative Communicator: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals."
The lesson that it gave to me seemed to be very thought through and helped me get an idea of what I might want to do when I get to that particular topic with my own students. All of the assignments, group work, teacher instruction and plans were aligned to each other and laid out neatly to understand. Once improvement that I aske for it to do was give me examples of the group project. That is the only item of improvement that I felt needed for this particular lesson from magicschool.ai. Take a look at what it created for me and see if what you think: https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/lesson-plan-generator?share=8d7775f1-0e6b-4f87-b417-31d69af065ad
This lesson would reflect some of our readings from this class especially the ISTE standards for teachers. The standard in particular that I am thinking of is 2.5 Designer that states, "Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and opportunities that use technology to accommodate learner variability." (International Society for Technology in Education, 2024) Magicshool.ai allows teachers to not only feel less stressed making lesson plans, but it allows teachers to get guided help on what each part of a lesson might look like effectively. Gura stated, "Educators need guidance, though, in finding, in understanding, and in applying all of this", referring to technology inclusion. (Gura, 2020). This fits well with magicschool,ai as it is a tool that can guide teachers in creating more engaging lessons and using technology in a way to enhance the learning not just replace the learning. This is also a great tool for teachers to ask for differentiation for all types of learners and to extend student learning.
Another tool that I chose to check out on magicschool.ai was the Youtube video questions. This tool takes a transcript from youtube and creates multiple choice questions that go with the video. The reason I chose this is because I use videos to teach my guided notes to my students. I create the videos and they have the ability to take their time on taking their notes so they have what they need to learning and practice what they have learned. I think this tool is useful for someone like me, because I could add a little short "quiz" for students to do to make sure they are actually understanding the video and not just going through the motions. This would be a great implementation for me to start using for the next time my students are taking notes from my lesson video.
As I have mentioned above, magicschool.ai is a great tool so teachers to get an idea on how to create lesson plans or even have other ideas for a lesson plan. It can go beyond what the curriculum goes and give more in-depth responses for teachers to use. I am not sure if I would use this source for my students as there have been issues with students using AI to cheat or write their papers for them. At this moment in my career, I would not let them use this until I understand more of what comes from teaching students to use AI. One challenge that I see with using a tool like this is that some teachers will not take the time to read what the outcome is. This could cause issues when an admin questions why certain things are on the lesson plan and what does it mean. I have heard of adults using AI and not reading over it and having to send an apology email saying they did not read over the AI outcome. I would not want to be in those shoes.
This statement is in the AI article from this week and it goes along with what I mentioned above about AI helping the teacher but we are the ones who need to discern the outcomes. It helps us understand that AI can be a tool but it should not replace human understanding and reflection.
I have not used in AI related tools in my classroom and I am not sure when I would start. I would need a lot more training in how to teach students the correct way to use AI and not use it as a cover up to do their work.
How could I use AI as a 7th grade math teacher? Leave any suggestions you might have and thanks for stopping by!

Hey Karie! I really like how you used MagicSchool as a starting point and then refined the lesson by asking for more detail. The YouTube question generator sounds especially useful for your flipped-style video notes, since it would help you check whether students are actually understanding the content. Your concerns about students misusing AI are completely valid, and it makes sense to wait until you feel more confident. Awesome post!
